Volunteers from the public and private sectors across the country trooped to public elementary and high schools on May 20 for the launch of the 16th Brigada Eskuwela of the Department of Education (DepEd), with the theme “Matatag na Bayan para sa Maunlad na Paaralan.”
Brigada Eskwela, also known as the National Schools Maintenance Week, mobilizes thousands of parents, alumni, civic groups, local businesses, nongovernment organizations, teachers, students and individuals who volunteer to do repairs, maintenance work and cleanup of public elementary and high schools prior to the opening of classes.
The back-to-school preparation drive, which was first established in 2003, was officially launched in Cavite at the Alfonso Central Elementary School. It will end on May 25.
Coast guards
As early as May 17, members of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) have collaborated with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for the yearly Brigada Eskwela in an elementary school in Tondo, Manila.
